It was created in response to the view that the existing underground press was no longer catering to the need for an alternative perspective.The publication launched as a weekly newspaper and later changed to a fortnightly schedule in August 1971. It was driven by Richard Neville, Andrew Fisher, Ed Victor, and Felix Dennis.
